My Journey: From Hobby to Full-Time Artist

28 March 2026

For years, painting was something I did on weekends and holidays. The transition to full-time artist didn't happen overnight — it was a gradual awakening.

The Corporate Years

I spent over a decade in the corporate world, painting in stolen moments before work and on weekends. My apartment was part home, part studio, with canvases stacked against every wall.

But something kept pulling me toward the easel. The satisfaction I felt after completing a painting was unlike anything my day job could offer.

The Turning Point

The turning point came during a holiday in Hampi. Surrounded by those ancient boulders and ruins, I painted for three days straight. When I stopped, I realized I hadn't thought about work once. That's when I knew.

Taking the Leap

I saved for a year, then handed in my resignation. The first few months of full-time painting were terrifying. Without the structure of a 9-to-5, I had to create my own discipline. But the quality of my work improved dramatically when I could give it my full attention.

Building a Practice

I paint six days a week, usually from 7 AM to 1 PM when the natural light in my studio is best. Afternoons are for stretching canvases, mixing colors, handling the business side, and visiting galleries.

The Rewards

Three years in, I can honestly say it was the best decision I've ever made. Not every month is easy financially, but every day is fulfilling creatively. I wake up excited to work, and I go to bed satisfied with what I've created.

If you're considering a similar leap, my advice is simple: start saving, keep painting, and trust that the universe rewards those who follow their passion.
